Donald Trump has used his first major political speech since his tumultuous departure from the White House to position himself as a prospective Republican presidential candidate in 2024.

Trump appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida on Sunday and criticized the Joe Biden administration for reversing tough policies on immigration and border security.

As the BBC's Nick Bryant reports, his supporters have chosen to forget about his impeachment for inciting the deadly U.S. Capitol riot in January.

This conservative conference had the feel of a revival meeting -- a gathering that suggested that if there is to be a battle for the soul of the Republican Party, then Donald Trump has the numbers to win.

The loser of the 2020 election was greeted like a conquering hero, partly because many people here still believe he won.

In his first address since leaving the White House, he ruled out creating his own party to rival the Republicans -- a sign of his continued dominance of the American conservative movement.

For many Republicans, it's almost as if January the 6th never happened.
