PM Chung Urges People To Stay Home As Virus Cases Surge

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun has warned that if the spread of COVID-19 is not brought under control now, South Korea could see daily cases surpass 1,000.
In a Central Disaster Management Headquarters meeting Friday, Chung stressed the seriousness of the current situation, as more than 500 new infections were confirmed for a second straight day, saying a resurgence of the virus "is getting into full swing in our country as well."
He noted that newly infected patients have been reported in all 17 major cities and provinces nationwide, as well all 25 districts in Seoul, pointing out that there has also been a huge spike in cases among young people.
"How we spend this coming weekend will decide whether we see a further expansion of new cases next week," Chung said.
He urged everyone to stay home if possible and avoid social gatherings.
The prime minister also called on health authorities to secure more hospital beds for a potential influx of critical patients.
