South Korea's health authorities are expected to maintain current social distancing levels in place to combat COVID-19, including keeping a ban on gatherings of five or more people.

Officials on Friday said it is highly likely that Level 2.5 distancing will continue for another two weeks, despite an apparent slowdown in new coronavirus cases.

According to the Central Disaster Management Headquarters, an announcement will be made Saturday on whether the country will continue or ease the current antivirus curbs that have been in place since last month to contain a third wave of the pandemic.

Special quarantine measures for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday are also expected to be revealed.

Restrictions on gyms, cafes and cram schools could be lifted due to growing concerns about the impact on business.

However, officials indicated that it's highly unlikely the government will loosen restrictions on karaoke rooms, while indoor entertainment venues, such as clubs and poker pubs, are also expected to remain closed.
