South Korea has reported 389 new coronavirus cases, the smallest daily jump in nearly two months, apparently on the back of tightened social distancing measures and fewer tests over the weekend.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on Monday said 366 local infections and 23 imported cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, raising the overall caseload to 72,729.

Fifteen more people died from the virus, pushing the death toll to 1,264.

Monday's infection tally marked a sharp fall from the 520 posted on Sunday and is the smallest daily caseload since November 25, after which cases peaked at a high of 1,240 on December 25.

Amid signs of a slowdown, health authorities decided over the weekend to ease some antivirus curbs on previously shuttered or scaled back businesses that have suffered revenue losses due to the third wave of COVID-19.

The capital area will continue to enforce Level 2.5 social distancing and the rest of the nation Level 2 for another two weeks.

The ban on private gatherings of five or more people and the restriction on business operations after 9 p.m., will also be extended.

But indoor gyms, cram schools and karaoke establishments will be allowed to reopen on the condition they strictly adhere to measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including a maximum capacity of one person per 8 square meters.
