The Seoul Metropolitan Government is reminding residents and visitors that the annual New Year's Eve bell-tolling ceremony at the Bosingak Belfry in the Jongno District has been canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Instead, a pre-recorded video of the ceremony will be posted online on Seoul city's official YouTube page and other social media platforms.

It is the first in 67 years the event has been called off.

The city is urging people to stay at home and refrain from holiding gatherings in order to stem the spread of coronavirus infections.

Local authorities will be patrolling the area around the Boshingak pavilion and nearby Gwanghwamun during the year-end holiday to prevent crowds from forming.
