The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it was ready on Tuesday to handle heavy snow forecast for the capital region.

The Korea Meteorological Administration expected up to 3 centimeters of snow through the evening.

Seoul city said more than 4,000 personnel were on standby with hundreds of snowplows to clear roads and sidewalks.

Salt trucks were dispatched in advance.

The heightened level of preparedness comes after heavy snow compounded by freezing temperatures paralyzed much of the country last week.

City safety officials have urged people to leave their cars at work and instead take public transportation to avoid traffic and icy conditions on the road.
