The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced plans on Wednesday to beef up video surveillance at parks along the Han River in the wake of the death of a college student.
City officials said more so-called smart poles, which are equipped with CCTV cameras, public Wi-Fi and Internet of Things sensors, will be installed across the capital by the end of the year, including at Hangang parks.
Earlier, more than two dozen such poles began trial operations in six major areas.
There have been increasing calls for more surveillance in areas by the Han River after the 22-year-old student, Sohn Jung-min, was found drifting in the water late last month after disappearing days earlier.
Police are still looking into the cause of his death.
