One man has died and five remain missing after three boats capsized near the Euiam Dam in Gangwon Province.
According to authorities, a private rubber boat and city-operated vessel capsized early Thursday while trying to rescue officials from a police boat that overturned some 500 meters upstream from the dam.
The police vessel was working on facility repairs.
Eight people, including police officers, local government officials and civilians, were on the boats at the time of the accident.
One person was rescued at the scene.
The seven others, however, were swept through the floodgates of the dam, which were opened earlier to release water built up from heavy rainfall.
Officials said one of the men was rescued downstream while the body of another was found near Nami Island.
