Typhoon Lupit is moving towards the Korean Peninsula, but it's still unclear how much of an effect it will have on South Korea.
The Korea Meteorological Administration on Thursday said the strong storm could bring high waves off the coast of Jeju and other southern coastal areas along with strong winds.
The weather agency said it was still unclear whether Lupit would make landfall, however, it continues to closely follow the system.
China's National Meteorological Center reported in the morning that the typhoon hit Shantou city in Guangdong Province packing winds of up to 23 meters per second at its core.
The typhoon is expected to pass over Shantou this evening and head towards Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture this weekend.
