The 101st edition of the National Sports Festival, the country's largest athletic competition, has been postponed to next year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The decision was made Friday during a meeting between Sports Minister Park Yang-woo and the heads of five local governments, including this year's host, North Gyeongsang Province.
North Gyeongsang will hold the festival in 2021, followed by South Jeolla in 2022 and South Gyeongsang a year after that.
Minister Park thanked the provincial governments for their cooperation and agreeing to put off the competition by one year.
Lee Kee-heung, chairman of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, also requested active support for the athletes who have been preparing to compete for the past year, so they don't suffer disadvantages due to the delay.
