Students at select schools in the country will soon be wearing uniforms made in modified "hanbok," traditional Korean attire, as early as this fall.

The culture ministry, together with the Korea Craft & Design Foundation, revealed Thursday that 22 middle and high schools were selected to adopt modified hanbok uniforms on a trial basis.

KCDF also selected four hanbok manufacturing companies to provide the uniforms while assigned designers help oversee designs.

Hanbok is known for vibrant colors and simple lines and is worn by Koreans on formal and ceremonial occasions, but in recent years it has gained traction as a fashion trend among young people and foreign tourists.

The ministry said it plans to announce more schools for the program next year.
