Naver and Daum, South Korea's two largest internet portals, have temporarily suspended the comment section under sports news articles.

Naver announced the move in an official blog post on Friday, citing constant malicious and excessive defamatory remarks made against some athletes as reasons for the move.

The company said it attempted to block such comments by strengthening its monitoring systems, but to no avail.

Kakao, the operator of Daum, also said it was also disabling comments for the time being.

Their moves were prompted by mounting calls for tougher measures against cyberbullying after professional volleyball player Go Yoo-min, who was found dead late last month, had reportedly suffered from continuous malicious comments online.

The two companies earlier took similar action, removing the comment feature on entertainment news pages, following the deaths of Sulli and Goo Hara, two K-pop stars who ended their own lives after being the targets of intense public scrutiny and cyberbullying.
