Top U.S. congressional leaders have slammed President Donald Trump's suggestion that he might not accept defeat in the November election.

On Thursday, a day after Trump refused to clearly guarantee a peaceful transfer of power, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell assured American voters the winner of the election would take office in January as planned.

McConnell tweeted, "There will be an orderly transition just as there has been every four years since 1792."

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it was necessary to remind Trump that he is in the United States of America, which is a democracy, and that that he is not in North Korea, Turkey, Russia, or other countries with strongman leaders.

Trump sparked outrage when he indicated he might not honor the results of the presidential election or treat mail-in ballots as legitimate.

When asked if he is committed to the peaceful handover of power if defeated, Trump replied, "Well, we're going to have to see what happens."
