The government is expected to decide this weekend whether or not to upgrade social distancing in the capital region and other coronavirus hot spots.

Health ministry spokesman Son Young-rae said Friday that authorities will collect expert opinions over the next two days and make a final decision during a meeting of the Central Disaster Management Headquarters on Sunday.

Amid a recent spike in coronavirus infections, Seoul and its surrounding areas have been placed under Level 2 social distancing until December 7, with other regions including parts of Gangwon Province under Level 1.5 measures.

The spokesman reiterated public calls for people to cancel or postpone social gatherings to help contain the spread of transmissions and avoid visiting multi-use facilities.
