Seoul city has issued an administrative order banning gatherings amid plans by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions to hold a massive rally Saturday at Yeouido Park.

The metropolitan government on Thursday cited the recent surge in coronavirus cases in the capital region as reason for the decision.

The city said residents are also very concerned about the risk of infections spreading through large-scale gatherings, stressing that it's difficult to follow quarantine guidelines if there are large crowds.

Violators of the order could face a fine of up to 3 million won and legal action.
