Seoul city has decided to grant coronavirus disaster relief funds to foreign residents.

The municipal government announced on Wednesday that all foreign residents that meet certain criteria and have household incomes smaller than the capital's median income can apply for the disaster relief funds, beginning August 31.

In March, the Seoul Metropolitan Government doled out 542.3 billion won worth of emergency relief money to 1.6 million households to help them cope with the economic impact of the pandemic.

At that time, all foreign residents were excluded from the one-time cash payout program, except marriage immigrants and refugees.

But the National Human Rights Commission of Korea advised the city in June to include foreign residents, explaining they were discriminated against despite also being hit hard by COVID-19.

In order to be eligible for the assistance, the head of household must have one of the visas that permit employment and profit-making activities in South Korea and have been registered as living in Seoul more than 90 days since reporting alien registration as of August 27.

Those who have student and general trading visas and work restricted jobs are not eligible.

The city said households with up to two members could receive 300,000 won, while those with five or more members could get 500,000 won.

The relief money will be distributed by prepaid cards.

Online applications can be made from August 31 to September 25 through a Seoul city government website (http://fds.seoul.go.kr), or at 40 designated sites, including the Seoul Global Center.

District offices will accept on-site applications from September 14-25.

Data shows there are an estimated 95,000 foreign households in Seoul.
