Two people were killed and 56 others injured in a hospital fire in South Jeolla Province early Friday.

Officials said the fire broke out at a hospital in Goheung County, some 470 kilometers south of Seoul, at 3:34 a.m.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze just after 6 a.m.

Although sparks were not seen from outside the building, officials said they assumed smoke quickly filled up inside the building, leading a high number of casualties.

Authorities were still searching the building as of 8:30 a.m.

They plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
