North Korea has endorsed leader Kim Jong-un as the general secretary of the ruling Workers' Party.

The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that an election took place Sunday at an ongoing congress in Pyongyang.

The move follows the regime's revision of party rules to reinstate the secretariat system that was scrapped in 2016.

The general secretary title was previously held by Kim's late father, Kim Jong-il.

According to the report, Kim Yo-jong, the regime leader's younger sister, was not included as an alternate member of the party's powerful political bureau.

There had been speculation she could be promoted to a higher position since she appeared to undertake a more prominent role last year in inter-Korean affairs and other key issues.
